She attended summer school in 1943 at Wessington Springs for secondary education.

She then taught at Mondamin Country School in Hand County from 1943-45 and Wide Awake Country School from 1945-46.

In 2010, Gordon was honored to be inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame.

Over the years, Gordon was recognized for his many acts of community service on the local and state level.

He was named the South Dakota Elk of the Year in 1985, served as the District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler in 1988, and as the State President in 19.

Garnos was an active member of the Jaycees, where he served as the chapter president in Watertown, and received their Distinguished Service Award.

She then began working in January of 1974 at Community Bailey Hospital through its transition to Mid Dakota Hospital until June of 2003.

After she raised her children, she worked for a year at the Raven Sewing Factory in Reliance.

In 1949 they moved to a farm southeast of town until relocating to their farm northwest of Kimball in 1953.
