Good balance while still being an American-style (unbalanced, hop-dominant) IPA. Given the strong aroma it is no surprise that hops dominate the flavor, perhaps even more than usual for an IPA. Ranger New Belgium Brewing Grapefruit Sculpin Ballast Point Brewing Company View and learn more ...
Opened the bottle and its like the perfume counter at Horne's Department store is having a promotion for Chanel No. Nobody expects a balanced IPA, but with Mad Hatter it is not unreasonable to ask whether any malt flavor is detectable. For such a heavily hopped beer, this easily avoids the pitfall of excessive bitterness.
It pours cloudy copper with white head that is leaving some lace. Taste is citrus and pine with a lingering pithy finish. The flavor hits of juicy grapefruit up front, bright floral honey, onto lingering pine needles, a candy sweetness in the middle, onto a lingering sticky resinous and piney finish as it sticks on the tongue. Wavy bands of lacing are evident during the tasting.
The mouthfeel is medium in body with good carbonation. Have to say, this is considered by my picky IPA taste buds to be one of the best, hands down. Tropical fruit on the nose with an afterthought of mint. Flavor switches it up; intense pine resin on the palate with fruit (tangerine, mango) factoring on the finish. At some point you have to accept what you are and move on. Great smelling beer Taste is dominated by bitter hops and malt. Carbonation is quite light, as this remains a very drinkable beer. Pours a hazy, dull orange with a slightly off white head with superior side glass lace and good retention. Mouthfeel is light-medium in body (but closer to light) with a pleasant carbonation just shy of lively and a trace of oiliness to the texture.
